BorgWarner is currently looking for a Senior Electric Drives Engineer based at our PowerDriveSystem (PDS) offices in Gateshead.

The successful candidate will be working with a team of engineers designing and developing next generation BorgWarner inverters and motor drive systems with applications ranging from passenger cars to heavy trucks. As part of the Electric Drives Innovation team the successful candidate will take ideas from blank sheet of paper to technology demonstrator.

Job role:

A Senior Electric Drives Engineer ’s responsibilities include:

  • Research in to new motor control algorithms and power electronics;
  • Designing motor control algorithms, inverters and power converters for use in automotive and other vehicle applications;
  • Design documentation;
  • Software coding, debugging and verification;
  • Hardware test and validation;
  • Working with other engineering disciplines to optimise system design;
  • Working with the electrical machines and power electronics product line management to define requirements;
  • Assisting applications engineers with optimisation of motor control in the customer application;
  • Ensuring that development follows the company processes and quality procedures;
  • Supervision and guidance of junior engineers and technicians.

Must have experience and skills in ALL of these areas below:

  • Vector control of electrical machines (PMAC and/or IM);
  • Real time embedded control;
  • Real time programming in C;
  • SIMULINK & Matlab;
  • Design and development of circuits such as motor controllers, power supplies, battery chargers or dcdc converters;
  • Design of power electronic circuits at power levels of 5kW or more;
  • Design of power electronic circuits using power MOSFETs or IGBTs.

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Industry based research in the area of power electronics and real time control;
  • Experience with SiC or GaN power devices;
  • Thermal design of electronic equipment;
  • Microprocessor control and interfacing;
  • Experience with real time embedded control development including Matlab, Simulink, Embedded code, dSPACE Micro-autobox or equivalent;
  • Design of variable speed motor drives hardware and software;
  • Familiar with use of CAD tools for simulation, schematic capture and PCB layout;
  • Experience in the automotive industry;
  • Design for high volume manufacture (over 10,000 per year);
  • Design to meet EMC and safety standards;
  • Experience of developing systems to ISO26262;
  • Engineering processes following the development ‘V’ cycle.

Qualifications:

  • MSc in electric drives, motor control or power electronics.
